The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) are launching an investigation into certain 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe vehicles after two complaints alleging failures of the right front axle shaft. In both instances the failure occurred with less that 5,000 miles on the odometer. The preliminary investigation will determine if the safety problem requires a recall that could affect approximately 50,000 vehicles.

The NHTSA are also questioning a General Motors recall repair on certain 2012-2013 Chevrolet and Buick vehicles equipped with “eAssist”. According to GM, overheating of the circuit boards in the Generator Control Module (GCM) could result in loss of battery charge, the illumination of the engine malfunction indicator light, and in extreme cases, a fire in the trunk. Owners were asked to take their vehicles in to have the GCM tested and replaced as necessary, but new reports show that vehicles which passed the inspection are still experiencing the problem. The NHTSA are questioning whether the procedure for identifying a defective GCM is effective enough.
