Subaru will be recalling almost fifty thousand 2012-2013 model year vehicles for a potential problem with the remote start system. The vehicles affected by this recall includes:

  • 2010-2013 Legacy and 2010-2013 Outback vehicles equipped with an automatic or CVT transmission and an Audiovox remote engine starter (RES) accessory.
  • 2012-2013 Impreza vehicles equipped with a CVT transmission and an Audiovox remote engine starter (RES) accessory.
  • 2013 XV Crosstrek vehicles equipped with a CVT transmission and an Audiovox remote engine starter (RES) accessory.

If the Remote Engine Starter (RES) fob is dropped, the internal battery retaining clip could move and damage a component on the PC board. This could cause the fob to transmit an engine start or stop signal without the driver knowing. If the vehicle is in range and receives the signal it could continually start and stop until the fob battery is depleted or the vehicle runs out of fuel. If the vehicle is parked in an enclosed area there is a risk of carbon monoxide poisoning. The problem does not pose a safety risk while driving because the RES is completely deactivated after the vehicle is started with the key.

Owners receiving a recall notice will be asked to bring both of their original RES key fob to the nearest Subaru of America to have them replaced. For more information about the problem, contact Subaru at 1-800-782-2783.
