BMW has identified a breaking problem in certain 2014 sedans and sports cars which could lead to the failure of the brake vacuum pump and loss of brake assist. The automobile manufacturer will be contacting approximately 76,000 vehicle owners with information about the issue and how to get it repaired. (NHTSA Campaign Number: 13V-454). The vehicles affected include:

  • 2012-2014 BMW 320I
  • 2012-2014 BMW 328I
  • 2012-2013 BMW 528I
  • 2013-2014 BMW X1
  • 2013-2014 BMW X3
  • 2012-2014 BMW Z4

This problem involves the loss of oil to the brake vacuum pump.

The vacuum pump supplies pressurized oil for lubrication and internal sealing. In some cases, due to an insufficient fit, a seal disk in the hollow camshaft core may move during engine operation and could potentially block or restrict the pressurized oil supply holes. If the holes become blocked, the vacuum pump will not be lubricated and could eventually fail, resulting in loss of power assist braking and increased stopping distances.
