Subaru will be asking approximately five thousand 2013 Legacy and 2013 Outback owners to bring their vehicles in for repairs to fix a problem with the steering column.

According to the recall report, the steering column inner and outer shafts may have not been “press-fitted” sufficiently during the manufacturing process. The shafts could disengage from one another leaving the driver without the ability to steer, greatly increasing the chance of an accident.

Subaru is asking owners to immediately contact their nearest dealer for an appointment to have the problem repaired. Until then, they recommend that owners ensure the front wheels respond to the steering wheel before driving and to never adjust the steering tilt or telescopic position while driving.

Dealers will replace the steering column assembly with a new one. Owners wanting more information about the steering problem can contact Subaru at 1-800-782-2783.
