BMW of North America, LLC will be asking owners of certain 2005-2012 BMW R model, K model, S 1000 RR, and HP2 motorcycles to take their vehicles to the nearest BMW manufacturer approved repair facility to remedy a problem with the fuel system. This recall is the result of an engineering analysis (EA13-006) opened by the NHTSA in July 2013. The problem affects the fuel pump and auxiliary fuel pump on applicable models.

Due to excessive loads on the fuel pump flange quick connector, crack may develop in the flange. (Excessive loads can be generated during improper removal and insertion to the quick connector or by removing the fuel tank prior to disconnecting the fuel line. Further damage may be caused by corrosive materials.) Over time, the seal between the flange and the flange housing will deteriorate eventually leading to small fuel leaks during engine operation. Fuel leaks in the presence of an ignition source could result in a fire.

BMW will be notifying customers in February to take their motorcycle in for inspection. Dealers will either reinforce the fuel pump flange or replace the pump as necessary. Owners wanting more information about the problem can contact BMW customer relations at 1-800-525-7417 or email BMW at CustomerRelations@bmwusa.com.
