Warranty claims over engine durability of certain 2014 Chrysler 200, Dodge Avenger, Jeep Compass, and Jeep Patriot vehicles has resulted in Chrysler identifying a problem in certain 2.4L engines. The problem could lead to loss of engine oil pressure and failure of the engine’s main bearings. Chrysler’s campaign number is N52 and the NHTSA Campaign Number is 13V-552.

An investigation into the problem found abrasive debris in the balance shaft bearings which caused damage to the shaft journals. The debris was identified as particles from polishing tape used during the engine manufacturing process for Balance Shaft Modules (BSM). Engineering trial and tear down analysis of contaminated engines showed that if a BSM was replaced before gear damage could occur, a complete engine replacement is unnecessary.

Chrysler will be notifying owners of these vehicles to make an appointment with their nearest Chrysler, Dodge, or Jeep dealership to have the engine balance shaft module replaced free of charge. For more information about the problem, contact Chrysler at 1-800-247-9753.
