The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is investigating certain 2008-2009 Mercecdes Benz C-Class vehicles after receiving 21 complaints from owners who say they experienced a loss of one or more rear lamp assemblies as well as overheated electrical connector that resulted in melting connectors, smoke, and fires from the rear lamp connector in the trunk.

The investigation is only a preliminary evaluation, but if the NHTSA decides to upgrade to an engineering analysis, approximately two hundred and eighteen thousand C300, C350, C36 AMG, C43 AMG and C63 AMG vehicles could be recalled. The automaker is encouraging customers who are experiencing this problem to call 1-800-367-6372 or to contact their local dealer.
