American Honda Motor Co. have decided to recall over fifteen hundred 2013 Honda Accord vehicles manufactured between January 15, 2013 to April 5, 2013, after receiving 116 warranty claims regarding fuel leaks around the fuel pump. The vehicles affected by this recall are Low Emission Vehicles (LEV).

According to the recall report filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the wrong tank mold and materials were used to manufacture the fuel tank, causing the threaded portion of the the fuel tank neck to be out of specification. As a result, the fuel pump to fuel tank sealing integrity could be compromised causing the check engine light to illuminate. Drivers may also notice a fuel smell or leak which could increase the chance of a fire in the presence of an ignition source.

There have not been any fire reports related to the problem, but Honda is asking owners to bring their vehicles to their nearest dealer to have the fuel tank, nut, and O-ring gasket replaced free of charge. For more information about the problem owners may contact Honda at 1-310-783-2000.
