Newly appointed head of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Mark Rosekind is warning vehicle owners to expect automobile recalls in 2015 to surpass the record set last year. In 2014, the NHTSA was under scrutiny by safety officials and advocates for their slow response to recalls involving Takata airbags and GM ignition switches. Rosekind said improving the NHTSA’s vehicle defect analysis and recall system is his top priority. He is working to increase the maximum fine against automakers to encourage quicker response times to problems and hopes to increase funding for training investigators about new automobile technologies. According to Rosekind, car makers bear the greatest burden for detecting defects and hiding known automobile dangers will not be tolerated. He told senators at his confirmation hearing in November that he would bring a fresh set of eyes to the NHTSA.
