As a result of an investigation into stalling engines, Volkswagen will be asking owners of certain 2009-2014 Tiguan SUVs, to bring their vehicles in to have the fuel system software updated. Volkswagen’s recall number is 24AV/2W and the NHTSA campaign number is 14V-441.

According to reports filed with the NHTSA, it is possible for bubbles to form in the fuel system when winterized fuel with high vapor pressure is used in warmer climates and when the engine is restarted before it cools down after the vehicle has been run at operating temperature (hot soak). The problem could cause deposits to collect and degrade the electrical current flow inside the fuel pump, leading to reduced fuel pump performance and pressure. The fuel pump may not be able to overcome the vapor pressure under low loads and could stall shortly after the engine has been started. The unexpected stall could increase the risk of an accident.

Owners wanting more information about the problem are asked to contact Volkswagen customer service at 1-800-822-8987.
