General Motors will be recalling certain 2013-2014 Chevrolet Sonic vehicles for a problem with the gas tank mounting straps that could lead to the fuel tank separating from the vehicle. There have been no accidents, fires, or injuries related to the issue. Approximately 1,600 vehicles are affected by this problem.

According to the recall report, potentially faulty strap welds could cause the fuel tank to separate from the car and rest on the exhaust pipe and/or plastic fuel tank shield. If the shield and filler neck do not support the tank, it could separate from the vehicle completely making it vulnerable to punctures and fire in the presence of an ignition source.

GM will be asking all owners to take their vehicles to their nearest Chevrolet dealers to have the tank inspect and repaired as necessary. Owners wanting more information about the problem can contact the Chevrolet owner center at 1-866-694-6546.
