A small number of 2016 Kia Optima owners will be returning to their dealerships to repair a problem affecting the airbag system. According to the defect report filed with the NHTSA, the secondary chemical enhancer required for deployment of the second stage frontal airbag was not loaded during manufacturing. As a result, the airbag will not deploy.

Those receiving notices can return to their dealers to have the driver frontal air bag module replaced. Owners wanting more information about the problem are asked to contact Kia customer service at 1-800-333-4542. Kia’s number for this recall is SC131 and the NHTSA campaign number is 16V-231.
