A defective leaf spring in the rear suspension of certain 2005-2011 Toyota Tacoma‘s will have 700,000 vehicle owners returning their trucks for repairs. The NHTSA has received over two dozen complaints, with the first going back to 2009. The trucks affected include four wheel drive and Pre-Runner versions of the Tacoma truck.

According to the recall report, corrosion in the suspension leaf springs could allow it to break and move out of position. The broken spring could contact the fuel tank, brake lines, and other surrounding components, putting drivers at risk of an accident.

Toyota will ask owners to return their vehicles to their dealers to have the leaf springs replaced. Owners wanting more information about the problem are asked to contact Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331.
