The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) have opened a preliminary investigation into certain 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee sport utility vehicles after receiving complaints of the passenger side headliners catching on fire.

According to the investigation report filed by the NHTSA there have already been three customer complaints regarding a burning odor and visible smoke coming from the passenger side headliner near the sun visor. Drivers say that any attempt to clear the smoke only intensified the fires and the vehicles continued to burn even after they were shut off. All three incidents resulted in the fire having to be extinguished with an extinguisher and the vehicles bing towed.

NHTSA is opening this investigation to evaluate the scope, frequency, and consequence of the alleged defect. If the investigation should lead to a recall, approximately 146,000 vehicles could be affected. The NHTSA action number is PE13027.
