Certain 2009-2010 Volkswagen Routan owners will be contacted by the manufacturer about a problem with their vehicle ignition switch system. These vehicles may experience inadvertent ignition key displacement from the “run” to the “accessory” position while driving. If this happens, the engine will turn off, depowering various key safety systems including; airbags, power steering, and power braking. The loss of these systems may increase the chance of injury during an accident.

Those receiving notices will be asked to return to their dealers to have the ignition switch and key FOBs replaced, free of charge. Owners wanting more information about the problem are asked to contact Volkswagen customer service at 1-800-822-8987. Volkswagen’s number for this recall is 28H1 and the NHTSA campaign number is 15V-194.

Note: This recall supersedes recalls 11V-151 and 14V-396. (Volkswagen will replace existing recall code 28G1 with a new recall code of 28H1.) Vehicles that previously received an ignition switch trim ring as a recall remedy must have their vehicles remedied again under this campaign. Vehicles that have already received a new ignition switch are not covered by this campaign.

  • Vehicles that received a WIN module replacement under recall 28G1 will not be included in the new recall code because the WIN modules installed in those vehicles do not have the safety defect.
  • Owners of 2010 model year Routan vehicles repaired with a trim ring under recall 28G1 will be re-notified under the new recall code. A new WIN module and keys will be installed in these vehicles free-of-charge under the new recall code.
  • Owners of 2010 model year Routan vehicles that were not yet repaired under recall 28G1 will be re-notified under the new recall code. A new WIN module and keys will be installed in these vehicles free-of-charge under the new recall code.
  • Owners of 2009 model year Routan vehicles will be notified under the new recall code. A new WIN module and keys will be installed in these vehicles free-of-charge under the new recall code.
