Chrysler has announced a recall that will have over 11,000 Chrysler, Dodge, and Jeep owners, bringing in their vehicles to get the steering column inspected. The recall involves some 2011 model year vehicles that may have been built with a missing or incorrectly installed steering column pivot rivet. The missing or incorrectly installed rivet does not affect the steering of the vehicles under normal driving conditions, but in the event of an accident, the steering column may not be able to support the load of the airbag deployment. This condition may increase the potential for injury in the event of a frontal crash. Owners wanting more information on the recall can contact Chrysler at 1-800-853-1403. The Toyota Motor Company has announced a recall for almost 52,000 2001-2003 Prius Hybrid vehicles in the United States to replace the electric power steering pinion shaft attachment nuts. The nuts securing the pinion shaft in the steering gear box assembly may become loose when the steering wheel is repeatedly and strongly turned to the full lock position. Eventually, the driver will notice that the steering wheel will become harder to turn when making a left hand turns. Owners receiving recall notices will be able to take their vehicle to their local dealership where technicians will replace the attachment nuts with an improved nut. For more information, Prius owners can contact the Toyota Customer Experience Center at 1-800-331-4331 or go to www.toyota.com/recall.

Volvo has announced the recall of certain 2010-2011 XC90 Crossover Vehicles manufactured between January 2010 to August 2010. In a report filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), complaints of sudden loss of power steering is the result of a pipe that was manufactured out of specification. According to Volvo, the power steering fluid leak from the oil pipe connection at the steering gear valve housing will eventually lead to an increase in noise and a gradual loss of power steering. In the recall, expected to begin on May 31, the dealer will replace the oil pipe on the power steering rack. Owners wanting more information can contact Volvo at 1-800-458-1552.

Difficult steering in BMW’s 2004-2005 Mini Cooper has lead the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to upgrade its investigation to include almost 60,000 vehicles. The investigation began last fall with over 500 complaints filed with the NHTSA, and 4,500 warranty claims with BMW. Among the complaints were allegations of five minor crashes, three of which resulted in a fire. The suspect part is a malfunctioning cooling fan which causes an under voltage condition in the power steering electrical system. Drivers have complained about loss of power assist making it difficult to maneuver the vehicle, and the inability to restart the vehicle because of a drained battery. If the investigation leads to a recall, over 200,000 Minis built between 2001-2007 could be involved.

If you have received a recall to check the steering shafts on your new 2011 Chevy Cruze, you may want to get the transmission shift linkages inspected while you are there. The automobile maker announced that within the group of vehicles to be checked for steering, they plan to inspect over 120,000 vehicles with automatic transmissions to make sure the shift linkages are installed properly. Improperly installed linkages may lead the driver to think they are in a certain gear when they are not.
