After receiving seven complaints, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has decided to open an investigation into fuel line leaks in some 2011 Volkswagen Jetta and 2011 Volkswagen Jetta Sportswagen vehicles. Drivers complained about leaks at the fuel line to the number two fuel injector on Jetta vehicles equipped with 2.0L TDI common rail diesel engines. Because these engines operate at extremely high fuel injection pressures, the NHTSA’s wants to do a preliminary evaluation to assess the frequency and potential safety consequences of the defect.

Ford has announced a recall that will involve certain 2007 Ford Five Hundred and 2007 Mercury Montego Sedans built between September 5th -11th, 2006, for problems with the fuel tanks. The welds between the fuel tank and the filler neck were not done properly which could affect the strength of the joint. In the event of a rear impact, the welds could break allowing fuel to leak out and possibly cause a fire if there is an ignition source. Owners can expect to start receiving their recall notice starting August 15, where dealers will replace the fuel tank free of charge. Anyone wanting more information on the recall can contact the Ford Motor Company customer relationship center at 1-866-436-7332 .

Last week, Volvo recalled almost 8,000 2012 S60 sedans for issues with the fuel pump software that could lead to hesitation or stalling. Volvo has announced another recall this week for the same vehicle with the same issues, but the problem is not related to software. According to a report filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), a fuel line connector was manufactured out of specification which could result in the locking function not being engaged. Drivers may notice a fuel smell or a leak, and if the line disconnects completely, the vehicle will stall. The recall will affect certain 2012 S60 vehicles built between January 18, 2011 to January 28, 2011. Owners wanting more information about the recall can contact Volvo at 1-201-768-7300.

Volvo has announced a recall that will affect some 2012 S60 passenger cars manufactured between November 2010 to May 2011. The fuel pump software may not be compatible with the installed fuel pump resulting in insufficient fuel transfer in the pump unit. Volvo S60 owners may notice engine hesitation and possible stalling under certain driving conditions. Owner wanting more information about this recall can contact Volvo at 1-201-768-7300.

In 2009 Volvo has issued recalls for their 2010 XC60, 2009-2010 XC70, and 2008-2010 S80 models for similar problem with the fuel pump and the fuel pump software.

Honda has announced a recall for certain 2012 Civic 2 door and 4 door vehicles, to repair a possible fuel leak. The suspect vehicles, manufactured between April 21, 2011 through May 2, 2011, may have been manufactured with a misaligned o-ring in the fuel feed line allowing a small amount of fuel to seep through. Because many of the vehicles have not been sold yet, it is estimated that the recall will affect a little over 1,150 Civic owners. Honda will be sending out recall notices this month and urge owners to contact Honda at 1-800-999-1009 if they have any questions.

Volkswagen is recalling Audi model vehicles for a problem with the fuel system that could lead to a fuel leak and a potential vehicle fire. The problem is being blamed on aging plastic material in the fuel tank rollover valve. Stress from the ventilation line to the rollover valve nipple could lead to cracking of the nipple resulting in a fuel leak. The vehicles involved in this recall are equipped with 4.2L engines and include:

Owners receiving the recall notice can take their vehicles into their local dealer to have the rollover valve nipple replaced or reinforced. For more information, contact Audi at 1-800-822-2834.

An investigation into fuel tank problems could have the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recalling Ford F-150 pickup trucks. The investigation was started a year ago after 32 complaints of fuel tanks falling off. Today over 240 complaints have been received, with 95% of the reported incidents resulting in fuel spillage. If the investigation leads to a recall, almost three million 1997-2001 F-150 trucks could be recalled. Ford is cooperating with the NHTSA and encourages owners to contact their local dealer if they have any questions about the investigation.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has started an investigation into over 850,000 General Motors SUV’s after receiving complaints of inaccurate fuel gauges. Of the 668 complaints received, 58 said that their vehicle ran out of fuel even though the fuel gauge said there was still fuel in the tank. The vehicles involved in this investigation include:

  • 2005-2007 Chevrolet Trailblazer
  • 2005-2007 G.M.C. Envoy
  • 2005-2007 Buick Rainier
  • 2005-2007 Saab 9-7x
