The tests will evaluate two aspects of safety: crash worthiness &#8211; how well a vehicle protects its occupants in a crash &#8211; and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.delsack.com\/highway-safety-crash-avoidance-California-Lemon-Law\">crash avoidance<\/a> and mitigation &#8211; technology that can prevent a crash or lessen its severity.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>To determine crash worthiness, IIHS rates vehicles as good, acceptable, marginal or poor, based on performance in five tests: moderate overlap front, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.delsack.com\/crash-test-lowers-automobile-safety-scores\">small overlap front<\/a>, side, roof strength and head restraints. In the area of crash avoidance and mitigation, IIHS assigns vehicles with available front crash prevention systems ratings of basic, advanced or superior, based on the system type and its performance.<\/p>\n<p>The <i>TOP SAFETY PICK<\/i> requires good performance in the Institute&#8217;s moderate overlap front, side, roof strength and head restraint tests and, for the first time, good or acceptable performance in the small overlap front test introduced in 2012.
