Toyota has announced that they will be conducting two safety recalls involving certain 2004-2009 Prius vehicles.

The first involves approximately 670,000 vehicles in the U.S. to inspect the steering intermediate extension shaft. An improper treatment of the shaft could lead to the splines that connect the extension shaft to the steering gear box to deform under frequent and forceful steering at low speeds. The deformation could create an internal clearance that will lead to the splines wearing out prematurely.

The second problem involves approximately 350,000 vehicles that could have a manufacturing problem with the electric water pump. The pump could stop functioning, leading to the illumination of warning lights on the instrument panel. In some vehicles, the electric power supply circuit fuse could open causing the vehicle to stall.

Owners wanting more information about the problems can contact the Toyota Customer Experience Center at 1-800-331-4331.
